Mistakes: Evidence of Failure or Opportunities to Learn? It is up to You. – Nomo
How was it possible for me to discover I am overweight, and then go on to lose 306 pounds while gaining 341 over a 17 year period? Some would call it yo-yo dieting or label me a chronic dieter. I know I’ve called myself some nasty names over this time period. Since I don’t want to engage in name-calling, I simply call this experience My Roller Coaster.
If you look closely at my roller coaster, it is plain to see that losing weight has been relatively easy over the years. Dropping 15+ pounds in a month was a common occurrence. Losing 40 pounds over a 3-4 month period happened often as well. The problem is that I always seem to bounce back, in a bad way. I could never seem to keep it off, maintain a healthy weight, or make it permanent. Why?
What I Have Always Done
I now realize that what I have always done can be summed up with two words: “I Quit!”
It is not that I quit a specific diet or I quit an exercise routine, or anything like that. That is not the type of quitting that I have done in the past. I quit on a completely different level. I quit mentally.
Realize that, when you quit mentally, it doesn’t matter what you eat, what you drink, how much or what type of exercise you practice. When you quit mentally, everything goes downhill from that point. You will wander through life doing only the bare minimum. The things you fear will show themselves, and your successes will wither away.
Am I Doomed to Repeat the Mistakes of the Past?
So, am I doomed to repeat the mistakes of my past? History and my roller coaster would say that I probably am. But I know better.
I have learned that quitting mentally is the ultimate problem. So this means that I need to keep going mentally to experience true, permanent, weight loss success. But how do I keep going mentally? How do I achieve success?
How to Achieve Success
The Opposite of Success is not Failure, it is Laziness. – Nomo
Laziness? Really? Yes and no.
A lot of people get upset, turned off, or downright angry with the word Laziness. I’ve used other words, like apathy, indifference, etc., in its place, but the other words do not have the same impact as the word Laziness. But what does Laziness mean?
What is Laziness?
- Laziness is NOT taking a day off.
- Laziness is NOT thoughts of disappointment.
- Laziness is NOT not sticking to your diet.
- Laziness is NOT feelings of frustration.
- Laziness is NOT skipping a workout.
- Laziness is NOT eating a meal that makes you feel bad.
- Laziness is NOT eating a meal that makes you feel great, and guilty.
These things are not bad, these things just ARE. I used to consider experiences like these massive failures. Right after the experience, I would almost always start feeling sorry for myself, and then make the fatal mistake of giving up. I didn’t realize that failure is a part of life, and giving up is a conscious choice. Giving up is the prerequisite to laziness.
As I mentioned before, the biggest mistake I made, over and over and over again, is that I would quit. I would give up. I would quit mentally. I would stop caring. I would stop thinking. I would embrace Laziness.
How do you get success?
The successful fail, but they will also keep going. They will not quit, they will not give up. Success is a mindset, a way of thinking. Failure is a part of life, but giving up is not an option.
So why do people quit or give up? There is one underlying reason. People give up when they do not have a purpose.
Why are you trying to lose weight? Why are you trying to get fit? Why are you doing this? If you don’t have a legitimate reason, a reason that burns into your bones, every time you think of it, you are probably going to quit. You are probably going to give up.
Purpose is key. That is why I say, Laziness is not what you do, or don’t do, what you eat, or don’t eat. It is your mindset. What do you believe? What is your purpose? Are you going to be successful? Why?
