Change your thoughts and you change your world. – Norman Vincent Peale
From Fat to Thin to Fat Again
I have tried soooo many diets…
- Weight Watchers
- Slim Fast
- Eat Nothing (Starvation)
- Low-Fat
- Low-Carb
- Avoid White
- Atkins
- Mediterranean
- Paleo/Primal
- Exercise a Lot ( Not really a diet, but I’ve tried it.)
Changing a diet, or an exercise plan, is an external change. It is something outside of who you are. It is doing something that goes against your identity. (If it wasn’t against your identity, you would be doing it already.)
This is why I could never keep the weight off. I would change my diet, but I wouldn’t change myself. Any weight loss was temporary, and I would always revert back to the way things had always been.
I didn’t know that real change starts on the inside.
External vs. Internal Change
Adding something here. Taking away something there. Doing this. Not doing that. Changes like these are completely external to who you are. The evidence of this is that, more than likely, you just go along, picking and choosing the changes you make.
This is not real change. It is not internal change.
If you change who you are, your external will change. It must change to match the new you. But this requires real change.
All of the diets and exercise fads I have gone through the last 17 years, no matter how hard I have worked at them, no matter what efforts I exerted, regardless of the pain and suffering I went through, because I didn’t change internally, nothing permanently changed externally.
Yes, I might lose weight and keep it off for a while, but eventually, all of the loses return, and I go back to where I was, and what I was doing before.
I have learned that real change starts on the inside.
The Secret Behind Every Success Story
There are a lot of great weight loss and health blogs out there. Almost all of them have a section called “success stories” or something similarly named.
The funny thing is, if you read deep into the stories published on the sites, there will be one consistent thing across almost all of the stories.
That one consistent thing is that these people changed on the inside. You will almost always see a phrase like…
- I am sick of being fat!
- I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.
- I don’t want to depend on this medication! I can fix this.
- I don’t want to live like this anymore.
- I want to play with my kids.
- I will climb those stairs!
- I must make this pain go away.
- I want to enjoy my grand kids.
- I don’t want to die!
The people telling their stories were fed up, and they turned that frustration into a solid purpose that drove them to their success.
Previously, they didn’t have that purpose, that drive. However, something triggered in them that made them change on the inside. For some, it took years, but they eventually, each and every one of them, made up their minds. They combined everything in their lives, their thoughts and dreams, their beliefs and faith, and started focusing on that purpose.
That purpose was to get healthy, to get fit, to lose weight, to live the life they wanted to live. And they applied that purpose with a passion that couldn’t be stopped. The success happened after the internal changes took place, not before.
Real change starts on the inside.
I Have Changed on the Inside
I know that my health and weight loss problems are over because I have changed on the inside. I have a purpose that drives me. My success is just a matter of time. It has happened on the inside, and it is happening on the outside.
Do you have a purpose?
